Who ya calling pinhead?! by P-cate Who ya calling pinhead?! by P-cate
So uhmm, I learned how to do the perspective radial grid in photoshop and started out as a sketch. I didn't quite clean it up, because I knew if I took too long I would feel....uncontent by the end of it. And actually now that I stopped myself from cleaning it up more, I still ahve that kind of feeling. But hey backgrounds yayyy, finally. I hope I'll get more into it...heh...

Why do I always end up using red-green for spoopy shit?

There is a lot of depth to this picture. The composition is spot-on, and placing 'Not-Pinhead' (what is it he does want me to call him?) just off-center evokes such wonderful unease. The unassuming cleaver doesn't look big in his hand, but you know by the look of his smock and the environment that he knows how to use it to deadly effect.
Not-Pinhead himself is a fascinating critter. You've taken the human form and warped it just enough to be uncanny and obviously 'wrong', yet not overtly demonic or alien. The proportions and 'fight me' stance combine beautifully into a chilling monster. It feels like something that would break into a Miyazaki film and start carving people up, and believe me when I say I mean that as a heartfelt compliment.
The style utterly fails to lend itself to horror--but that's what makes it so bloody effective. The serene strokes and mellow blends of color are so peaceful for depicting something that probably wants to make pasta out of people. The lighting falling on the weapon and the smock, but not the face--another masterful touch.
I'm just now noticing how tiny his feet are. This creature is something truly bizarre, and I'd hate to run into him in a dark...kitchen.
10/10, out of the park. Fantastic job.

-laughs at the Spongebob reference- That's perfect! Love the title man, suites him to a 'point'.

But seriously; love the feeling that this gives but I would've used dark blues instead of the green. Makes it seem more 'I'm a cold killer' but the green makes it interesting like your in a eerie place that no one has been at for a looooooong time. The only thing that is bothering me is the hand holding the cleaver/hatchet. It looks kinda...off(I can't describe worth my life), like the blade isn't proportioned correctly for the perspective you're going after. Is he holding it in front or somewhat sideways? Either way, I'm getting conflicting messages to what view point your after with it.

Is the white box/heater have open gaps? If so, it wouldn't hurt to have thing slits of shadows running across, to make it seem its against something that's barred up. Giving the viewer a sense that they and the monster are trapped in a life or death struggle and to give this a more realistic lighting. Like, nothing is floating and everything has a solid mass.

But other than that, great piece over all. I tend to not like dark pieces but this one is interesting. Reminds me of Silent Hill or even Out Last's atmosphere when you accidentally effed up in the wrong room and you're about to die at a kill scene. Great job.

the spongebob reference makes everything friendly -- I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE *gun hands*

In fact, I starte doff with a blue tone, but blue seemed more of "action" and "coldness" as you say, and It wasn't really what I was looking for. I was looking for a nasty, unsettling ambient, where the air smells rotten, and so the combination of red and green pop up. It's a lot more frequent to found red and green in places where there's human or living stuff, or something that was alive. Red representing the blood, the violence, the heartbeats and life. The green, representing the state of rot, infections. All this combined to darker tones and red-ish lighting makes the unsettling atmosphere in my opinion. I could've chosed a greener light, but that would have been more to depict shock, because it's close to cyan. Red is visceral, nauseous, it's hot, you know what's going to happen. Red is the light not to shock but to aknowledge there's a visceral feeling of something you don't want to admit.

About the eprspective I gotta admit it, It's fucked up in many parts of this image HAHAHA. I rarely use perspective, perfect shapes in my art. In fact I hate drawing cities, they're so difficult to draw and paint-- I suffer. I'm more of a quick, unpolished brush stroke. So you can see why I am still not good at it. It's been so fun to kinda make it here though. i would love to cointinue pushing myself forward to make human structures come to life.

And thank you!, I've been watching too many silent hills video lately lol. Thanks for the critique!, is very much appreciated.

For the color thing, it's probably because red and green together are contrasting colors that... instead of complementing each other like blue and orange, tend to be really jarring next to each other, like I know whoever made Freddy Krueger made his sweater those two colors and made it really bright because it screws with the eyes. Plus they're both just like... symbolically spoopy colors. Green's always used for like slime and monsters and swamps and things and red for blood and anger and danger and all that. AND they make a really dingy sort of ugly neutral color together, which also works really nicely for horror and stuff. I really like how this turned out though, like... it's definitely got a very disturbing atmosphere too it and I can almost feel the tension in the place. Actually... I just realized how damn tall this guy is and that makes it even scarier.

YEAH DUDE HE'S VERY  B I G

And yes!, green and red are complementary colors xD, but I always end up choosing those for scary situations. Because this time I started using blues and red, and everything started to seem as a color aberration, but yes, as you say, green and red have interesting color psychologies, more fitting psychologies than blue, which is more calming. Blue and red is almost somewhat complementary, due to red being an analogous to orange. But blue is too chill for this kind of tense scene (remember you see blue washed suspense movies everytime, but as suspense, most of the times it's not really scary material, but action).

Red has a matter of violence in it's color, combined with its complementary color red, and obscure values, you can make up a unsettling tone (and ofc, adding creepy stuff to the image). Green for me means "disgust", gross shit and vomit. So violence and vomit is a very unsettling combination for me. Bc those are both things I despise the most.
